How a Solar Energy System Works. The sun is already giving off huge amounts of energy, so why not put it to use? With the Lennox® SunSource® Energy System we offer at Danco Heating & Cooling in Minocqua, you can cut down on your dependence on oil and gas and reduce your utility bills. So how exactly does it work? The most basic way to explain a solar energy system is that the system uses solar modules, which are composed of photovoltaic (PV) cells, to gather energy from the sun and convert it to electricity. This electricity powers light, appliances and electrical devices in your home. Grid-tied PV systems Grid-tied PV systems are the most common and least expensive for residential solar systems. The SunSource Energy System we offer is grid-tied, and that means it’s connected to your utility company’s power grid or power stations. Grid-tied enables you to use your solar energy system to power your home. On occasions when the system isn’t generating electricity, your home will receive power through the utility grid. In addition, when your system produces an excess amount of electricity, it will be fed back into the grid through the process of net-metering. With net-metering, your meter spins forward if you’re using electricity from the grid and backward when you’re putting your SunSource System’s electricity back into the grid. *Note: Most rebates and incentives that make a solar energy system less costly are only available when your system is grid-tied. Stand-alone PV systems are an alternative for those in remote areas without utility service, but they cost a lot more. A stand-alone system is not linked to a utility grid and provide for all of a home’s energy needs. Ready to go solar? Call Danco Heating & Cooling at 715-356-7000 or schedule a meeting online.
